Description    


This project implemented instream and riparian restoration activities on two different properties, one on Lobster Creek and the other on Preacher Creek. At the Lobster Creek site (worksite 20140290) habitat improvements included placing rootwad structures, streambank bioengineering on one side of the stream and planting of trees in the riparian zone. At the Preacher Creek site (worksite 20140289) instream habitat improvements included large wood placements, streambank contouring, with installation of rootwads and bioengineering on one side of the stream. Riparian improvements included planting of native shrubs and trees and construction of livestock exclusion fencing. Proposed metrics that were originally reported for a single proxy site were distributed to the final worksites.

Project Benefit    


The intent of this project is to improve the quality of salmonid habitat in about I mile of Lobster and Preacher Creeks while minimizing risks to existing infrastructure. Existing salmonid habitat quality in these stream reaches is low due to a lack of riparian vegetation, channel roughness and fish cover, and eroding stream banks. Water temperature in these reaches exceeds Oregon water quality standards in the summer. This project would improve winter refuge and summer rearing habitat for salmonoids without damaging existing infrastructure. The added benefits to salmonids include: increased habitat diversity and complexity through the addition of wood, increased shade and bank stabilization through the contouring/tapering and planting of heavily eroding banks, potential aggradation of coarse stream bed sediments, and reduced stream temperatures in the summer. The project will develop a collaborative relationship between the Alsea Watershed Council and participating landowners that can lead to additional salmonids restoration in the basin.
