The Neal Creek Land Acquisition is an excellent opportunity for the Tribes to resume the management and recovery of ESA listed steelhead and coho in Neal Creek and in the greater Hood River Basin. It is also a unique opportunity to protect and enhance critical habitat -as much of the lower Hood River basin has been developed to the extent that future restoration activities would not be feasible. This project would allow managers to resume fisheries management and research, protect crucial salmonid and riparian habitat, and enable future restoration actions. Future restoration actions / projects could include: floodplain reconnection, riparian planting and enhancement, and instream habitat complexity enhancement (LWD placement) in both Neal Creek and the mainstem Hood River. These elements would directly benefit the fisheries resources in the Hood River basin by increasing instream habitat complexity for all life stages and all species in the basin.
