Description

During the summers of 2017–2018, Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association staff members conducted gillnetting operations aimed at the reduction of the northern pike population in Shell Lake.

This project used PCSRF funds from both the NA13NMF4380235 and the NA14NMF4380332 awards. No funds were used past the respective end dates of these grants.

Project Benefit

By suppressing invasive northern pike in Shell Lake, CIAA is able to continue rehabilitation efforts to restore the natural sockeye salmon run to this lake, which is currently at historically low levels. The goal is to bring the population back up to historical levels while actively pursuing other technologies to suppress or eradicate northern pike. The lessons learned from the northern pike suppression efforts at Shell Lake may also be applied to other lakes in the Susitna watershed.
