Description    


Between 15 June 2016 and 31 October 2018, Pacific Watershed Associates (PWA) supervised the on-the-ground implementation of 1) upgrading and decommissioning treatments to reduce road related sediment delivery to watercourses from roads totaling 8.9 mi in length, and 2) the construction of ten large woody debris (LWD) habitat enhancement structures in mainstem Blue Waterhole Creek. Road upgrading treatments included individual treatments at 45 features (39 stream crossings, 1 spring, 3 road surface discharge locations, 1 bank erosion, and 1 ditch relief culvert) and road drainage improvement treatments along 5.0 miles of road which threatened to deliver sediment to the Garcia River and its tributaries. Road decommissioning treatments were performed at 96 individual features (71 stream crossings, 16 road fill instabilities, 6 road surface discharge locations, and 3 bank erosion feature), and included decompaction (road-ripping) and installing road drainage treatments for hydrologic disconnection along 3.9 miles of road. PWA estimates that these efforts will preclude future delivery of an estimated 10,207 yd3 of sediment to the Garcia River and its tributaries. Disturbed riparian areas associated with LWD structure installation and road decommissioning treatment activities were planted with a total of 214 Sequoia sempervirens seedlings. All of the seedlings were planted in suitable habitat locations during the 2018-2019 winter season.

Project Benefit    


Reduce potential of sediment delivery to coho habitat, by improving runoff from legacy logging roads. Increase instream habitat by adding 10 instream features.
