Description

The 106-foot high San Clemente Dam was removed. Removal of the dam provides vastly improved access for steelhead to 25 miles of spawning and rearing habitat in the mainstem and tributaries downstream of the next barrier on the river (Los Padres Dam). Approximately 3000 feet of river channel were reconstructed in the combined flow reach and reroute channel. Instream features that were constructed include rock weir steps, small and large resting pools, riffle-pool reaches, and embedded large woody debris. Floodplain features included a variety of large woody debris structures that were held together by thick rope and tied to large, buried boulders. Off channel ponds intended to provide habitat for California Red-Legged Frogs were also incorporated into the floodplain. The entire project site was revegetated to restore a mosaic of natural habitats appropriate to each location within the project footprint. Habitat types include oak woodlands, scrub, seasonal wetlands, riparian, and others. The habitat restoration will be actively monitored and maintained for at least five years after completion of the project. Monitoring and maintenance activities will continue for additional years if success criteria have not been met after five years. Amount of funding applied to each subcategory (C.2.a, C.4.a, C.5.a) were estimated based on the final budget for the project. Exact amounts were not broken out into their specific subcategory by the subgrantee.
