Description

Project implementation resulted in immediate short-term habitat creation in support of long-term natural physical and biological stream process. This project removed channelization and levees, plus lowering of streamside surfaces to elevations ensuring regular, annual flow of floodwaters into expansive streamside edges, resulting in reconnection of Supply Creek channels to a restored floodplain, establishment of new and more complex side-channel habitat including a pond providing coho refugia throughout summer 2016.

Through these recovery actions, the quality and quantity of salmonid habitat Supply Creek was increased, helping to increase the populations of coho salmon and other salmonids in the Trinity Basin. From a watershed-wide perspective, restoration of the valley floor reach of Supply Creek provides substantial low-gradient winter rearing habitat for both natal and non-natal salmonids in the Trinity Basin. The Hoopa Valley Tribal Roads Department completed the Supply Creek Restoration Project as outlined in the design documentation provided to NOAA Fisheries. Oversight and project management was provided throughout by Hoopa Tribal Fisheries, NMFS, Trinity Valley Consulting Engineers, and CDFW staff.

Project Benefit

The goal of the project is to implement a restoration project to improve anadromous fish habitat on a stream located on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation and implement priority actions outlined in the 2012 Draft Southern Oregon Northern California Coho Salmon Recover Plan. The project objectives are to implement a construction project to enhance fish habitat at Supply Creek.
