Description

A total of 1,125 beach seines and 64 fyke net sets were completed throughout the estuary by all of the monitoring partners during 2015 sampling season. Juvenile validation monitoring in the estuary is categorized into five different sampling bins, Estuary System-wide, Nearshore, Off Channel, Quilceda Reference, and Qwuloolt Reference. 416 beach seine samples were taken across the estuary as part of the Estuary System-wide effort, 288 beach seine samples were taken in blind tidal channels across the entire estuary as part of the Off-Channel effort, 160 beach seine samples were taken along the eastern shoreline areas of Possession Sound as part of the Nearshore effort, 144 beach seine samples and 32 fyke net samples were taken at both the Quilceda and Qwuloolt reference site that are part of the Qwuloolt Restoration project effectiveness monitoring effort. On August 28th 2015 the dike was removed at the Qwuloolt restoration site and tidal waters were reintroduced to the site. Following the breaching of the dike we began sampling efforts inside the Qwuloolt restoration site primarily beach seining we are working on compiling the datasheets from that effort so that we can provide an accurate account of our sampling effort in the Qwuloolt site so far. Also prior to breach we installed 3 data loggers wells with data loggers that record temperature, water depth and salinity. During the winter one of the data logger wells got washed away. We were able to recovery the logger and installed a new monitoring well site. Preliminary data results for the Qwuloolt restoration project were presented at the 2016 Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference in Vancouver B.C. Canada this April this included 2015 pre and post breach data collected with PCSRF funds (no PCSRF funds were used for the conference or data analysis). All 2015 data has been entered into a database for future analysis.

Project Benefit

The purpose of the project is to monitor the effects of restoration efforts in the Snohomish River Estuary and at the Qwuloolt restoration site to inform future restoration efforts, assess success of restoration efforts, and provide information to implement adaptive management on the restoration site over time.
