Description
The Yakama Nation purchased a Hydroacoustic Unit that will enable the Yakama Nation to monitor the re-introduced sockeye in Lake Cle Elum, WA. Once the sockeye fry emerge in the gravel above Lake Cle Elum they will stay in the lake and feed and live for one year before they begin their anadromous process. Through use of the Hydroacoustic unit in future years (using other funding sources for monitoring), the YN will have a better understanding of egg to fry and fry to smolt survival. By accurately assessing sockeye smolts populations from year to year, the forecast of adult returns to Lake Cle Blum will be improved. The YN will also be able to accurately keep track of the Mackinaw population in the Lake Cle Elum and make sure that their impact on the sockeye is reduced.
Below is the description of the Hydroacoustic unit that was purchased:

Project Benefit
Sockeye have been extinct in the Yakima Basin for over 100 years. The Yakama Nation have been reintroducing sockeye in Lake Cle Elum for the last five years. This project will enable better monitoring of the sockeye during all of its life cycle.
