Description

The funding for this project supported the CTUIR education outreach efforts from 2013 – August of 2014. Without this funding the Salmon Expedition, Salmon Walk and Return to the River events would not have financial support or be as successful. Over the past two years, the CTUIR education outreach coordinator was successful in reaching out to over 10,134 people (3,763 Adults & 6,371 children/students) through the three events and six workshops. One poster and one exhibit were developed and displayed at the various events. Two radio ads were broadcasted for a month beforehand for the Salmon Walk and the Return to the River event, along with 1000 flyers distributed for each event. Two hundred and fifty volunteers were solicited for all three main events. Presentations were made at six schools on the First Foods and the importance of salmon to the tribes.

Project Benefit

Species that would benefit from CTUIR DNR outreach program include federally ESA listed summer steelhead and bull trout, reintroduced spring Chinook and Pacific lamprey, as well as inland redband trout and margined sculpin, listed as vulnerable under Oregon’s Sensitive Species rule. By educating the public about ESA species there will be gained support for habitat restoration projects and fish protection. In education school students they share information with parents and family and become aware of their natural environment. At the same time gaining public support and partnerships for salmon restoration and future projects.
