Description

Nooksack Tribal staff have taken a leadership role in the design and implementation of the WRIA 1 Salmonid Recovery Plan monitoring and adaptive management program. This project supported monitoring of the effectiveness of log jam and riparian restoration projects to inform adaptive management of WRIA 1 salmon recovery efforts. Specific monitoring activities included data management and analysis of: (1) habitat surveys and channel mapping to evaluate reach-scale effects of projects; (2) monitoring of temperatures in log jam-formed pools in the South Fork to quantify extent of temperature refuge created; (3) snorkel surveys of the lower South Fork Nooksack River (RM 0.9 – 12.9) to record abundance and distribution of adult chinook relative to restoration sites; and (4) monitoring of riparian restoration effectiveness. Monitoring was reported in written reports and in a presentations to the restoration community at River Restoration Northwest 2014 Symposium.

Project Benefit

The goal of the project is to evaluate the effectiveness of voluntary habitat projects implemented to benefit Nooksack early chinook; specifically, projects will be monitored for effectiveness at meeting specific habitat targets and/or addressing key limiting factors. Lessons learned will inform the design and implementation of new projects, which will lead to more efficient use of funding and more effective habitat restoration, thereby either maintaining or increasing the rate of chinook recovery in the Nooksack River watershed.
