Description
The Yurok Tribal Nursery/Tree Planting and Estuary Restoration Planning Project was initiated by YTFP’s Lower Klamath Division in April 2012. The project helped facilitate the operation and maintenance of the Yurok Tribal Native Plant Nursery (YTNPN) and funded restoration crews to plant several hundred native trees that were grown in the YTNPN in riparian habitats of lower Terwer Creek, a high priority coastal tributary. Given the importance of riparian forests to the formation and maintenance of productive salmonid habitats, this project helped fulfill several of the goals and objectives of the PCSRF including improving the status of ESA-listed coho salmon and ensuring the overall sustainability of naturally-spawning Pacific salmon and steelhead. This project also helped support ongoing restoration planning efforts in the Klamath River estuary and coastal tributaries.
Project Benefit
The Yurok Tribal Nursery/Tree Planting and Estuary Restoration Planning Project was initiated by YTFP’s Lower Klamath Division in April 2012. This project focused on operation of the YTNPN and planting hundreds of native trees and shrubs in riparian habitats of lower Terwer Creek, a high priority coastal tributary. Increasing riparian forest resiliency and productivity continues to be a priority salmonid restoration measure in the Lower Klamath Sub-basin. Planting native trees from the YTNPN in riparian habitats will result in long-term benefits to salmonids and other native wildlife. Benefits include increased channel and bank stability and improved large wood recruitment conditions, and facilitating geomorphic processes necessary for maintaining complex and productive fish habitats.
