Description

Two years of coordination for the Lower Columbia River chum reintroduction were completed. This entailed coordinating the initial development of a hatchery brood, rearing, and release program at Big Creek Hatchery in Oregon with counterparts in Washington, from which the original brood were collaboratively collected from an existing hatchery program. Extensive coordination occurred with managers and hatchery staff from each state to accomplish brood collection annually. Additional coordination within Oregon was accomplished during the rearing and release phases, and began for returning fish.
PCSRF FFY 2010 Funds were used to initiate the project. PCSRF FFY 2012 Funds were only expended on project costs incurred during the FFY 2012 PCSRF award period

Project Benefit

This project functions to implement the Lower Columbia River Conservation and Recovery Plan for Oregon Populations of Salmon and Steelhead. By involving and coordinating with other groups in the reintroduction process we gain additional information and efficiencies. A joint reintroduction strategy with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will provide a strong foundation for future restoration and research in the Lower Columbia. Identifying priorities for restoration will help attract restoration funding and ensure it is used where it is most effective.

The plan being implemented is for four Lower Columbia River/Columbia River ESUs/DPS: coho, Chinook, steelhead, and chum. For chum, a key sub-component of this plan is an extensively developed "Oregon's Columbia River Chum Salmon Recovery Strategy". This work addresses components of this chum recovery/reintroduction strategy.
