Description

Field-based, statistically-developed surveys of adult spawners and redds were conducted. Two years of field surveys were completed in the Lower Columbia River sub-domain of Oregon for coho, Chinook, chum, and steelhead. These data continue to add to our status and trend information for the species addressed, as well as allow informed harvest management decisions.
PCSRF FFY 2010 Funds were used to initiate the project. PCSRF FFY 2012 Funds were expended on project costs incurred during the FFY 2012 PCSRF award period.

Project Benefit

This project implements a component of ODFW’s Oregon Plan Monitoring Program, which provides data on the status and trends in adult salmonid populations. Information provided by this adult monitoring includes: estimated number of adult spawners; proportion of hatchery fish in the natural spawning population; and information on spatial distribution, temporal distribution, and age composition. Results are calculated at three nested spatial scales; the whole SMU/ESU, component strata, and/or each population. The data are critical for evaluating population status and are used directly to target management and restoration priorities and actions. The Oregon Plan Monitoring Program continues a long term commitment to status and trend monitoring of adult and juvenile fish abundance and distribution and stream habitat and riparian conditions. The monitoring data provides information about abundance, productivity, survival, distribution, and viability of salmon and steelhead in support of conservation and recovery planning and implementation.

          Description of monitoring
Conduct salmon and steelhead spawning ground surveys. Includes both randomly selected and convenience sites. Data collected included: Number of live fish (by adipose fin clip status); Number of dead fish (biological sampling includes species, gender, MEPS length, marks and/or tags, and in some cases collect scale and/or snouts); Number of redds; stream and weather conditions.
