Description

Live Spawner Surveys
Surveys occurred bi-monthly on coho reaches to gather data on: coded wire tags, fin clips, scale samples, length, run timing, and run size. Surveys began in September and were continued through December. These surveys were conducted on: Spring, Malaney, Uncle Johns, Campell, Deer, Johns, Elson, Bishop, Little, Rock, Gosnell, Mill, Skookum, Goldsborough and Coffee Creeks. These creeks represent South Sound Streams and the total adult survey mileage is indicated in association with this worksite. Mill, Skookum and Goldsborough also had smolt monitoring associated with them, however due to the way the tribe manages these distinct activities they have elected to report the spawner survey mileage associated with these three creeks within the South Sound Stream worksite.

Acoustic Telemetry (South Puget Sound Worksite)
Acoustic receivers were placed at the mouth of Hammersley Inlet and throughout Shelton Harbor in March and April. A change from the proposal was made in order to calculate smolt residency in the Goldsborough estuary. In May 50 tagged smolts will be released from Goldsborough Creek. In October receivers will be recovered.

Coho Smolt Monitoring
As part of continuing monitoring the Tribe placed panel weir traps in Skookum and Cranberry Creek worksite. Goldsborough and Mill were monitored with rotary screw traps. The trap in Sherwood Creek could not be placed due to bank failure. Traps were placed in March and removed in June. Information obtained includes: numbers of smolts, length, condition, and migration timing.

Project Benefit

The proposed project includes two components that continue to contribute to our knowledge of wild coho production and early marine survival.
The combined efforts of this project will specifically inform habitat preferences, out-migration pathway and timing, potential competition with other species and most importantly early marine survival of juvenile coho within South Sound. Information provided will be specifically used to guide restoration efforts within Deep South Sound Inlets.
