Description
From 2011 through 2012, this project funded 11 grant projects located across Alaska. Project #13 focused on providing outreach and education to landowners whose property contains the most critical habitats for salmon throughout the Matanuska Susitna Borough. Project #14, providing funding for use in the Mendenhall Wetlands Invasive Plant Project, continued strategic outreach, education, and support for partners and volunteers for on-the-ground control and eradication efforts. Project #15 focused on promoting public appreciation of the Kenai River ecosystem through public education and an on-the-ground outreach campaign. Project #16 funded radio segments and a webpage about Alaskan salmon. Project #17 provided funding for a public information and education campaign which increased public awareness of the impacts from motorized watercraft on freshwater systems. Project #18 funded a website, educational materials, and public workshop education and outreach campaign focused on approved off-road vehicle (ORV) stream crossings and potential ORV effects on salmon and salmon habitat. Project #19 funded control efforts of invasive plant infestations located in 14 communities in the Tanana Watershed. Project #20 utilized radio, print, and in-person venues to provide the most recent scientific information regarding conservation and restoration of the salmon and steelhead fishery to the people utilizing the Kenai Peninsula. Project #21 funded the Kenai Peninsula Adopt-A-Stream program, designed to foster awareness of habitat conservation and emphasizing the importance of careful stewardship of riparian areas through classroom and on-site teaching. Project #22 funded a professional development experience to help 18 rural educators develop a year-long salmon education program. Project #23 focused on restoration of degraded spawning grounds on the Knik River and Jim Lake and development of outreach pamphlets and conservation materials.
Project Benefit
The increased understanding, awareness, and restoration actions generated by this project will contribute to the health and sustainability of salmon populations, including those harvested by commercial, sport, and subsistence fishermen.
