Description

This project addressed subsistence salmon harvest assessment on the Chilkat and Chilkoot rivers in Haines and Klukwan, Alaska. The work includes comparisons of harvest data collected through household surveys with data collected from subsistence salmon fishing permits and a descriptive analysis of the historic and contemporary subsistence salmon fisheries on the Chilkat and Chilkoot rivers.

Project Benefit

An understanding of traditional and contemporary harvest patterns will contribute to better salmon management practices. Cooperation between users and managers should result in better harvest data and improved management of salmon, leading to stronger stocks and better returns.
