Description
Each April and May coho salmon smolt (¿70 mm total length (TL)) were captured and tagged with coded-wire tags. Each fall between September and December, an open population mark-recapture experiment was conducted to estimate adult coho escapement in the Nakwasina River. This was done in conjunction with CWT recovery efforts (estimating the tagged proportion) that provided information for estimation of smolt abundance with a closed population model.
Project Benefit
1. Precise estimates of escapment will enable total coho salmon production, exploitation and marine survival to be calculated. This will provide an indicator stock for the Sitka Sound area.
2. Improved in-season and post-season management for Sitka Sound coho salmon stocks.
3. Funding of this project will allow a habitat assessment of the Nakwasina drainage (which was logged under old practices) to be conducted collaboratively with the Salmon Habitat Assessment Project and Salmon Habitat and Waterways Project and estimate parameters such as smolt and adult production per unit of habitat and long-term effects of significant habitat disturbance.
4. Evaluate the harvest rate of this stock and evaluate the potential effects of increased harvest due to large nearby hatchery releases.
5. Establish a biological escapement goal for the Nakwasina River coho stock.
6. A detailed operational plan for the escapement estimation will be done by July, 2001. Accomplishments
