Description

This project integrated existing relevant coastline geographic information system (GIS) data to generate a draft nearshore marine habitat classification scheme to better describe geomorphic and ecologic processes along the extensive coastline of Southeast Alaska. In addition to data integration, other GIS tools and datasets were used to predict exposure, nearshore slope, and intertidal vegetation as well as model for estuaries, canopy kelp beds and potential eelgrass habitat.

Project Benefit

Improve slamon habitat stewardship in estuarine habitats to insure that the optimum production of salmon is sutainable over the long term. Improve the departments ability to meet the principles and criteria of the Sustainable Salmon Fisheries Policy regarding habitat, effective salmon management sytems, and public support and involvement in salmon management.
