Description

This project recreated a large side channel along the Yakima River mainstem. To accomplish this, a 4500-foot levee has been breached, allowing a controlled portion of the river to flow through the Hanson Ponds, which are shallow, floodplain gravel pits. The upper pond is 12 acres, while the lower pond is 18 acres in size. The levee served as an access road into the property. The roadway surface has been ripped and seeded. The project also placed large woody debris in the ponds to enhance stream complexity, and excavation spoils have been placed in the ponds to create peninsulas. Juvenile spring Chinook, coho, steelhead, and resident game fish will benefit through improved rearing habitat. The City of Cle Elum, Washington Department of Transportation, and Washington Fish and Wildlife are involved in the project.

Project Benefit

Improved Survival of Juvenile salmonids. Ancillary benefits for terrestrial wildlife.

Plant survival, and vehicular access will be visually monitored, with remedial measures implemented as needed. Fish presence in the ponds and downstream channel will be monitored via snorkel surveys. Faculty and graduate students from Central Washington University are monitoring the project as well.
