Description

During the summers of 2007 and 2008, Jamestown SKlallam Tribe constructed seven engineered logjams in the vicinity of the Railroad Bridge, Dungeness River. Permanent cross-sections were established for the logjams upriver of the Railroad Bridge. In fall 2009, PCSR funding paid for the installation of three additional cross-sections downriver of the logjams. With the FY09 funding allocation proposal, the Tribe contracted with Johnston Land Surveying, Port Angeles to re-survey all eight of the cross-sections (five upriver and three downriver of the logjams) as part of our effort to monitor the logjams. The field work was conducted by a two-person crew in October. Data reduction and mapping was conducted November through December.

Project Benefit

Cross-sections provide a benchmark or baseline to gauge how the logjams affect and create floodplain, side channels, and mainstem habitat, which are all desired outcomes. Re-surveying will allow us to document these kinds of changes, as well as any changes to river flow paths. Further, the nearby landowners continue to be interested in these logjams and whether their presence will negatively affect their property. The cross-sections will help us track these landowner concerns.
