Description
The project provided support to the Tribe for continued collection and assessment of data on critical stocks mainly in the Dungeness River, Jimmycomelately, Siebert, and McDonald Creeks, by carrying out the tasks below. Tribal or seasonal field technicians and surveyors were retained to carry out field and assessment work involved with these tasks: (i) Continued trap and release of coho, steelhead and cutthroat smolts (and other species that enter traps) during downstream migration in Dungeness River and selected creeks to measure productivity of sampled streams. Collected data for specific age classes, depending on the species. Used monitoring data to track abundance for habitat management planning, restoration implementation planning and water quality program purposes. Used coho monitoring data to estimate returns of adult coho to the region in the following year. Combined data with WDFW data to compare annual production levels and assess trends. Provided any necessary maintenance on traps; (ii) In cooperation with WDFW, sampled out-migrating salmonids and other fish in the Dungeness, and continued marking (temporary marks, using fin clips of the upper and lower caudal fin lobe) coho smolts and steelhead smolts that were trapped and released from Matriotti Creek. (NOTE: This activity is performed at the Matriotti trap site only, as it is within the Dungeness River system and the data of released out-migrants is tied to what WDFW is capturing at the mainstem screw trap downstream); Began scoping for report and/or brochure that describes the stock assessment project, summarizes the data results and findings, and how they are contributing to salmon recovery - to be completed with FY10 allocation; (iii) Continued activities related to analysis of Dungeness Chinook Supplementation Program for determining appropriate supplementation strategies; In cooperation with WDFW, continued to map out Chinook redd locations. (iv) Steelhead surveys were not conducted due to sustained high water in the Dungeness River, making surveys impractical and dangerous. However, Coho salmon spawning ground surveys were conducted on the Dungeness, Hurd Creek, Beebe Creek, Canyon Creek (Tributaries to the Dungeness) and Greywolf Rivers beginning October 28, 2011 and ending Jan 13, 2012. Surveys were conducted by one full time technician and one part time technician. Please see uploaded January-June 2012 Progress report for more information.
Project Benefit
Stock assessments will continue to help co-managers and biologists better understand the status of salmonids in the Dungeness Watershed, and to identify key riparian areas for protection, timing of out-migration related to other stocks, etc. The marking project (which makes use of temporary marks - fin clips of the upper or lower caudal fin lobe) can continue to allow us to achieve a highly accurate estimate of the total number of naturally produced coho and steelhead in the Dungeness River system, a key parameter in our efforts to properly manage these species locally and to assess key stock productivity questions. Continued analysis of the experimental Chinook Supplementation Program (assessing adult returns) is needed to further evaluate its success in restoring Chinook and its applicability to other river systems, as well as to glean information on potential supplementation programs that may be needed in the future for other stocks. Data gathered by WDFW from sampled carcasses are used to determine appropriate Dungeness Chinook supplementation strategies such as age, size and location of juvenile release. With the latest addition of steelhead to the ESA list, further assessment is needed to understand recovery needs for this species. Redd surveys help assess number of spawners, as well as habitat conditions.

Description of monitoring | |
WDFW and the Tribe conducted a major captive brood production program from 1997 through 2004 (one generation). Major increases in the spawning population of Dungeness Chinook occurred from 2001 through 2006. Once major releases of supplemental production dropped off at the conclusion of the captive brood program returns to the river also dropped off. Freshwater productivity of Chinook became a focus of our efforts.
Supplementation efforts have included acclimation and release ponds in the upper portion of the watershed. We have collected coded wire tags from adult spawners in the vicinity of the ponds that indicate Chinook are returning to their release site and utilizing spawning habitat in the upper reaches of the river. This has been an objective of our recovery efforts as the lower reaches of the Dungeness are impacted by development.
Five consecutive years of smolt trapping efforts have allowed us to measure freshwater productivity of Dungeness Chinook. From spawning to smolt migration, Dungeness Chinook are surviving at approximately ½ the rate of Skagit Chinook. This has increased the importance of improving freshwater habitat conditions and water conservation measures in the basin.
Cooperative efforts between WDFW and the tribe have resulted in a highly accurate estimate of total annual freshwater production of coho and steelhead form the Dungeness River system. Trapping and fin clipping of smolts from one of the only major tributaries remaining in the Dungeness, followed by recovery of the marks from the mainstem Dungeness smolt trap, provides all of the data necessary to produce the estimates of production which allow an annual assessment of the freshwater conditions that produce one year old smolts (coho) and two year old smolts (steelhead). Coupled with an effort to better estimate the annual spawning escapement of coho and steelhead, egg to smolt survival estimates, similar to those we have generated for Chinook, will be possible. This data will be used to design our habitat restoration efforts in the Dungeness.
