Description

QDFi contracted with Biosonics, Inc. to produce the feasibility and design information necessary to effectively deploy an acoustic sampling system in the Quinault River downriver from Lake Quinault and just upriver from the commercial fishing zone. The following tasks were completed:
1. Evaluation of potential sites for deployment of a fixed-position hydroacoustic system.
2. Deployment of temporary fixed-position hydroacoustic arrays for field testing at each candidate site.
3. A detailed report of the findings at each candidate site that explains the technical and practical advantages and disadvantages of each site, recommendations regarding final site selection as well as an opinion as to overall feasibility of the project.

Project Benefit

A fixed-position hydroacoustic system will provide QDFi with real-time estimates of sockeye salmon escapement, improve inseason fisheries management and facilitate achievement of QINs sockeye restoration objectives. This project will provide feasibility and design information necessary to assure informed site selection for the hydroacoustic system and ensure wise use of limited funding to deploy the system and begin modifying current fisheries management procedures.

          Description of monitoring
Developing a non-intrusive (i.e. non-harvest/no mortality) method such as a fixed-position hydroacoustic system for measuring run strength as fish enter the Quinault River will provide real-time estimates of sockeye salmon escapement, improve in-season management, and facilitate achievement of QIN's sockeye restoration objectives.
