Description

This project counted adult sockeye and Chinook salmon passing the Situk River Weir in 2007, estimated the annual escapement of sockeye salmon into the Situk River using mark-recapture methods and observer counts, and described the age, length, and sex composition of sockeye and Chinook salmon.

Project Benefit

Counting salmon through the Situk River weir allows the department to adjust weekly commercial fishing periods and sport fishing bag and possession limits on a timely basis to ensure that the BEG is met for each species.

          Description of monitoring
Completed estimates of 2006 sockeye escapement for Hetta, Klawock, Karta, Falls, Kutlaku, Kanalku, Sitkoh, and Klag Lakes, and estimates of subsistence harvest in the Klawock and Hydaburg fisheries. Provided analysis of Kutlaku Lake sockeye population assessment from 2002 to 2006 in support of proposed regulatory change before the Federal Subsistence Board. Collaborated with partner organizations on detailed or new proposals for continued assessment of sockeye salmon populations in all of these systems. Participated in discussions with working group on Chatham Strait fisheries management issues. Working with Klawock Watershed Council, ADF&G biologists and managers, and University researchers to find new ways to assess and improve sockeye habitat and production in the Klawock Lake drainage, as an alternative to continued stocking which has been demonstrated to be ineffective.
