Riparian Vegetation Nursery

These funds were used to purchase a Greenhouse, which has been acquired and set up by students of the Mendocino Community College as part of a Natural Resources Course in conjunction with the Tribes Tech Prep Program. The Greenhouse has since provided for the propagation of several thousand trees and shrubs (Cottonwoods, Willows, Buckeye, Maples, Alders, etc ...) that were collected from within Round Valley as either sprig cuttings or seeds. These were propagated within the Greenhouse and overwintered during the harshest months of winter and are annually planted throughout the 2.4 mile long project area as part of the Tribes Mill Creek Riparian Corridor Development Project. The Greenhouse project continues to be an extremely valuable and productive component of the Tribes ongoing efforts to address the restoration of Mill Creek with the production of thousands of trees and shrubs on an annual basis.

This project component allows the Tribe to annually collect thousands of seeds and sprig cuttings from the local and native tree and shrub populations within the Valley and propagate them within the Greenhouse which keeps the vegetation used throughout the 2.4 mile long , 52 acre Project area local. In addition, the Greenhouse allows the Tribe to save thousands of dollars that would otherwise be spent on purchasing the thousands of trees and shrubs used every year as part of the on-going Mill Creek Riparian Corridor. The Greenhouse has also provided jobs and training for tribal members and has also served as an excellent educational platform for involving the local schools (Grade - High) to to see first hand what and how the Tribe is involved with the restoration of Mill Creek as well as participate in various Greenhouse activities and planting trees.
