Description

The purpose of this project was to coordinate activities within ODFW and among other agencies to reintroduce Chum Salmon to the Lower Columbia River. Activities included: coordinating broodstock collection at Big Creek Hatchery, chairing the Lower Columbia River Chum Salmon Workgroup, developing outplanting strategies and sampling designs, supporting habitat restoration projects, and coordinating with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to implement reintroduction goals.

Project Benefit

This project will work to implement the Lower Columbia River Conservation and Recovery Plan for Oregon Populations of Salmon and Steelhead. This will include tactical projects such as maintenance of a conservation broodstock as well as coordination with other agencies to identify and efficiently implement reintroduction strategies. Specifically, a coordinated reintroduction effort with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will provide a strong foundation for future research and restoration of Chum Salmon in the Lower Columbia. Identifying priorities for restoration will help attract restoration funding and ensure it is used where it is most effective.
