The goal of the Quinault Indian Nation (QIN) is to restore naturally sustainable and harvestable salmon populations in the QIN Usual and Accustomed Area (U&A). The current focus is on restoring habitat that supports salmon populations in the Quinault River and Queets River watersheds, home rivers of QIN. Project funds will be used by QDFi to conduct some or all of the following activities: 1) survey accessibility of off-channel pond habitat by coho juveniles for identification of restoration opportunities in the Clearwater River; 2) finalize a geomorphic assessment of the Upper Quinault River (UQR) to guide selection of future logjam locations; 3) update a hydraulic model for Big Creek to use during alternatives analysis and design; 4) analysis of alternatives and selection of preferred alternative from previous reach assessment on Big Creek 5) conduct riparian forest plant community surveys in the UQR to guide maintenance of previously planted riparian forest areas The purpose of the project is to document fish use patterns and habitat conditions to inform management in the restoration of fisheries resources and salmon habitats, assess and characterize baseline conditions of instream and riparian habitats, and to develop large woody debris, instream, and riparian forest rehabilitation designs.
