Description

The confluence of Peshastin Creek and the Wenatchee River is a critical location for migrating and rearing spring Chinook, summer Chinook, steelhead, coho, and bull trout. Despite limited rearing and spawning habitat under current conditions, the site supports high densities of juvenile salmonids, especially Chinook (WDFW unpublished). Given the low occurrence of Chinook redds in Peshastin Creek, it is likely that fish produced elsewhere in the Wenatchee basin use the lower creek for rearing. Additionally, in 2011 and 2012 Peshastin Creek had higher spawning escapement by wild-origin steelhead than any other Assessment Unit in the Wenatchee basin.
CCFEG, WDFW, Natural System Design and project partners developed and evaluated several alternatives to restore/enhance fish habitat along the lower 2,000 of Peshastin Creek. The group unanimously selected an option that maximized habitat, minimized impacts to neighbors and public access, and incorporated a significant lead removal component. Due to a three month delay the core stakeholder group was unable to vet the project through the UC Regional Technical Team and other partners, so CCFEG, WDFW and NSD are presenting our alternatives analysis to a larger stakeholder group outside of the grant agreement (Sept 2016). Final deliverables include a preliminary design set, planting plan, hydraulic modeling, and Basis of Design report (see PRISM).

Project Benefit

Worked through alternatives analysis and then completed prelminary design of the preferred alternative. This future restoration project will beneift Chinook salmon and Steelhead trout.
