Description

The North Yakima Conservation District completed an assessment to investigate the feasibility of creating groundwater fed side-channel habitat in existing remnant and paleo-channels in the Naches River floodplain, just west of Naches, WA. Additional off-stream habitat in this reach of the Naches River will improve habitat conditions for Mid-Columbia steelhead, spring Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, and Bull Trout by providing refuge from the flip flop flow regime change that takes place in the fall. The assessment focused on utilizing the entire 50 acres of property along 0.5 miles of the Naches River to achieve the maximum possible benefit to fish. The assessment identified favorable groundwater conditions to support the creation of off-channel habitat at the project site, which facilitated the creation of conceptual channel design alternatives and ultimately a chosen alternative that was developed into a preliminary level design.

Project Benefit

To provide fish refuge from the flip flop flow regime change that takes place in the fall.

Description and scope of the plan implemented
The assessment, design, and subsequent implementation of this project will address several habitat actions described in the 2004 Yakima Subbasin Plan for this section of the Naches River, including: increasing riparian habitat and sources for LWD recruitment, as well as increasing off-channel habitat and flood plain connectivity. The 2004 Yakima Subbasin Plan identifies impediments to spawning and rearing caused by the flip-flop flow regime in the Naches Rivers as a Tier 1 Habitat Limiting Factor that has a negative effects on salmonid life histories. The Subbasin Plan recognizes that strategies to address and improve habitat diversity and temperature, especially in the Lower Naches main stem floodplain, should include the restoration and protection of side channels and springbrooks, as well as the restoration of riparian areas. This project also addresses Naches Action #5 Restore Naches River Floodplain, in the 2009 Yakima Steelhead Recovery Plan.
