Description

The intent of this project was to provide coordination among Intensively Monitored Watershed (IMW) leads and develop a report detailing management implications from Pacific Northwest Intensively Monitored Watersheds. The report highlights recommended management actions based on IMW results, such as fish response to changes in habitat and mechanisms impacting salmonids. The Pacific Northwest Aquatic Monitoring Partnership (PNAMP) IMW Working Group developed a questionnaire, which was sent to the IMW leads. The questionnaire was sent to practitioners from Pacific Northwest IMWs, asking for treatment types, habitat and fish population responses, and management. Thirteen of the 16 IMWs that received the questionnaire were able to provide responses. A report was developed detailing the collective core messages and results, which included habitat and fish response results that indicate that many of the implemented restoration methods improve aquatic habitat and elicit a positive fish response.

Project Benefit

The intent of this project was to provide to the broader salmon recovery and habitat restoration community an initial indication of the management implications of the IMW results to date and to suggest how this information might be applied in their own programs. This project was not a technical evaluation of IMW monitoring programs nor an assessment of the effectiveness of IMW study designs. The target audience for this report included salmon conservation and recovery managers, policy specialists, habitat restoration practitioners, and monitoring specialists. The report was shared with the SRFB to help inform monitoring program decisions at the June 1-2, 2022 meeting.
