Description

WS #1 Lower Elwha -- This worksite was amended out of the project scope.
WS #2 Makah Umbrella Creek sockeye broodstock efforts entail monitoring the relative contribution of hatchery and natural-origin sockeye to the Umbrella Creek, Big River, and Lake Ozette adult returns. This project includes: adult monitoring (including visual surveys, and carcass counts) to enable the Makah Tribe to estimate the proportions of hatchery origin natural spawners and natural origin sockeye retained for broodstock.
WS #3 The Tulalip broodstock integration project includes using tissue samples from Snohomish Chinook broodstock hatchery- and natural-origin adult Chinook (i.e. during carcass surveys) and progeny for mark-recapture (parentage assignment) DNA analysis. Results will include an estimate relative productivity and gene flow between hatchery- and natural-origin fish and compared to demographic estimates of pHOS and PNI.
WS #4 Nisqually, Contributed to the operational expenses for Nisqually floating weir including installation, daily operations (i.e. adult monitoring) and removal.
WS #5 Tulalip, Project involves differentially mark 100% of Tulalip Hatchery Chinook and Coho and recover otoliths, CWTs, and scales from Snohomish regional escapements and fisheries (i.e. carcass sampling). Samples will be processed at the Tulalip Stock Assessment Laboratory (TSAL) and use results to estimate contribution rates of hatchery- and natural-origin Chinook and Coho to Snohomish regional natural escapements, hatcheries, and terminal-area fisheries and to measure pHOS (for Skykomish and Snoqualmie populations), pHOB (Wallace and Tulalip Hatcheries), straying rates, and ecological and genetic interactions between hatchery and wild stocks.
WS #6 Lummi, Supports a contract with the WDFW Otolith Lab to conduct an analysis of Lummi Bay Hatchery Chinook to determine contributions to spawning grounds and hatchery rack.

Project Benefit

The purpose and goals of tribal hatchery monitoring and evaluation projects are to support data collection and analysis efforts that are used to evaluate hatchery practices for their conformity to hatchery reform goals (i.e. promoting salmon recovery, providing treaty fishing opportunity, or improving hatchery program effectiveness).

This project support a contract with WDFW to read otoliths to allow LNR to determine if fish are released at life stages and locations that maximize homing fidelity. This supported a comparison between the Lummi Bay hatchery release location and the Bertrand Creek acclimation pond to assess homing fidelity Otolith marks also were used to identify hatchery origin fish so the status of the natural population is not masked

This component of the project involved developing a demographic estimate of hatchery / wild composition on the spawning grounds. Which was subsequently compared the genetic based estimate.

        •      . . . . . . E.2.b.3.a
Key issues addressed by genetic analysis research
Used genetic mark-recapture for the spawning area above the two smolt trap sites, to estimate effective population size, relative productivity and gene flow between hatchery- and natural-origin fish; compared the 95% confidence intervals for each estimated parameter for several different methods to verify absence of bias of the estimates. The best estimate of each parameter was to calculate genetic-based PNI, compared genetic-based estimates of effective pHOS and PNI to demographic estimates.
