Description

Project analyzed returning adult Chinook salmon otoliths–the structure in the inner ear–to better understand juvenile salmon survival strategies in the upper Columbia River. Major outcomes of this project include revealing previously unknown life-history strategies involving extended periods of rearing within the Columbia River, which appear to play an important role in population level productivity. Additionally, this project has shown that juvenile rearing locations may be determined from otolith microchemistry analysis through incorporating water chemistry analysis. The findings from this project are now being actively incorporated into management strategies and additional studies intended to elucidate the needs of juveniles rearing within the Columbia River for extended periods. This information provided a more complete understanding of the life history diversity of the Wenatchee and Entiat populations of spring Chinook. This information will be used to inform restoration projects.

Project Benefit

The project revealed previously unknown life history diversity in upper Columbia Chinook populations. That information will be used to information future restoration projects.
