Description
This tribal monitoring grant award to the NWIFC implemented projects that improved, evaluated, and/or monitored certain hatchery practices and strategies, and modified or constructed hatchery facilities to improve hatchery operations. This award funded 8 distinct projects which are represented as worksites. Some of the work-types were originally inadvertently selected in error. This final description includes more explicit detail to describe work accomplished with each project. Worksite / Project #1 Ozette Sockeye Smolt Monitoring: Project involved the Makah Tribe calcein marking hatchery progeny and monitoring marked out-migrating smolts to help inform survival rates of different release strategies.
Worksite / Project #2 Umbrella Creek Sockeye Escapement Monitoring: Makah natural resource staff using Peterson disks and subsequent spawners surveys to estimate: the proportion of hatchery origin sockeye that are spawning naturally, and adult salmon population monitoring conducting visual surveys
Worksite / Project #3 NIsqually tribe installation and operation expenses of the floating weir, and its effects on water quality were minimal. The project work-type was selected in error
Worksite / Project #4 Stilliguamish Tribe will operate a rotary screw smolt trap on the Mainstem Stillaguamish River with the intent of capturing emigrant hatchery and wild Chinook smolts. Stilliguamish Chinook Smolt Estimation (funds smolt trap operations) as a component of adult salmon population monitoring
Worksite / Project #5 Tulalip Tribe will directly conduct genetic integration and sampling of Snohomish Chinook broodstock during egg takes for the joint co-manager program.
Worksite / Project #6 Tulalip Tribe will work with Stock Assessment Laboratory (TSAL) and WDFW. Use results to estimate the contribution rate of hatchery- and natural-origin Chinook and coho to the hatcheries. Tulalip - Snohomish Brood stock Integration (include both tissue sampling and analysis and adult escapement monitoring (adult monitoring-visual, and carcass) funds allocated 40 /60 with a majority of funds towards adult salmon population monitoring and balance to tissue and supports project #7 below
Worksite / Project #7 Tulalip Tribe Differentially mark 100% of Tulalip Hatchery Chinook and coho: recover otoliths, CWTs, and scales from terminal fisheries, hatcheries and Snohomish basin escapement, supporting life history study.
Worksite / Project #8 This Puyallup Tribe project will genotype an additional 650 NORs passed upstream from 2008-2010 to assess relative reproductive success of NORs and acclimation pond fish passed upstream from 2004-2010.
