Description

The project completed designs (preliminary through final), cost estimates, permitting, and construction bidding for the removal of approximately 350 linear feet of riprap and fill from the north end of Cornet Bay Day Use Area of Deception Pass State Park, to recover 0.33 acres of beach habitat area. Forage fish spawning has been identified in this area and removal of the armor will result in an increase in availability of spawning habitat. Armor removal will result in improved nearshore habitat and refugia for juvenile salmonids out-migrating from the Skagit River. Partners: Island County Marine Resources Committee, Northwest Straits Foundation, Washington State Parks. This project will benefit, Chinook, coho, pinks, steelhead, Pacific Sand Lance, and Surf Smelt. PCSRF FY16 funds were spent within the award window.

Project Benefit

Provide design and permitting documents for restoration to: 1. Increase quantity and quality of available forage fish spawning habitat and improve nearshore habitat conditions for migrating juvenile salmonids along Deception Pass and Cornet Bay. 2. Improve survival and avoidance of predators due to restored shallow water habitat for migrating and foraging juvenile salmonids.

Description and scope of the plan implemented
Armor removal (restore natural marine shorelines and processes) is identified as a Tier 1 strategy in the Multi-Species Salmon Recovery Plan Update (Update). Removal of armor is also identified as a WRIA 6 long-term goal and short term targets in the Update. Armor removal is how this project is implementing the Update.
