Description

This project will benefit local and regional salmonid recovery efforts by advancing the state of restoration science concerning best practices for use of LiDAR data for habitat evaluation and restoration prioritization. Within 18 sq miles of Pudding Watershed/113sqmiles of Noyo Watershed, the project identified specific key off-channel habitat features and high-priority reaches where restoration efforts will have the greatest benefits for salmonids.

FY19 funds were spent within the award window.

Project Benefit

This project has two related goals.

1. assess the accuracy of the California FEMA R9 LiDAR-derived digital elevation model (DEM) within the riparian zone and develop guidelines and approaches for using LiDAR and LiDAR-derived hydraulic and geomorphic analyses to evaluate salmonid habitat conditions and prioritize specific reaches within large watersheds for salmonid habitat enhancement work

2. apply the guidelines and selected approaches developed in conjunction with existing physical habitat and biological monitoring data to characterize habitat suitability and develop a reach-scale restoration prioritization for the Pudding Creek and Noyo River watersheds.

Methods used for this assessment are expected to be applicable to other watersheds and restoration projects with similar LiDAR datasets and terrain.

This project directly addresses this task both by developing new guidance and methodology for performing winter rearing habitat delineations and by performing such delineation for up to 184 miles of salmonid habitat in the Noyo River and Pudding Creek watersheds.

Description and scope of the plan developed
The goal of this project was to evaluate the accuracy of regional high-resolution topographic data (LiDAR), assess its suitability for supporting reconnaissance-level hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, and utilize such analyses to quantify existing salmonid habitat conditions and identify and prioritize restoration opportunities. The primary focus of the effort was to address winter refugia as a limiting factor, however there is significant overlap between this goal and the goal of increasing/improving pool habitat, and the identified restoration project priorities are expected to improve rearing habitat in general.
