Description    


This study is a continuation and expansion of the long-term monitoring initiated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) in 2013 to ascertain the abundance and spatial structure of southern California steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) within the Monte Arido Highlands and Conception Coast Biogeographic Population Groups (BPGs) as outlined in CA Fish Bulletin 182.

Project Benefit    


Following methodologies outlined in Fish Bulletin 182, we will continue the operation of a Life Cycle Monitoring (LCM) station on the Ventura River, the selected backbone population of the Monte Arido Highlands BPG. The Ventura LCM has been operated since 2012 and serves as a focal point for methodology testing, estimates of freshwater productivity, and an indicator for ocean conditions. This site also has the added benefit of documenting impacts of ongoing restoration projects including removal of the Matilija Dam. The Ventura LCM consists of a fixed counting station, pit tag arrays, spawner surveys and low flow summer surveys. Monitoring of the CC BPG will include operation of an LCM on Gaviota Creek in combination with BPG wide redd and low flow summer surveys as outlined in Fish Bulletin 182. Comprehensive monitoring of CC will allow SCSRR to provide population level abundance estimates needed by the National Marine Fisheries Service.
