Description

Project will recover otoliths, CWTs, and scales (i.e. carcass sampling) from Snohomish regional escapements and fisheries Tulalip Hatchery Chinook and Coho. Samples will be processed at the Tulalip Stock Assessment Laboratory and tissue analysis will result in an estimate contribution rates of hatchery- and natural-origin Chinook and Coho to Snohomish regional natural escapements, hatcheries, and terminal-area fisheries.

Project Benefit

Monitoring hatchery/wild fish enabled by this project is the backbone of the hatchery monitoring program and is mandatory. Recovery of the entire suite of indicators, including thermally-marked otoliths, CWTs and adipose fin clip data, is “non-discretionary” and required to estimate straying and contribution rates, demographic-and genetic-based estimates of pHOS, pHOB, and PNI, survival, H vs W escapement, genetic mark-recapture estimates, gene flow, relative productivity. These estimates enable us to ID hatchery fish from the thousands of other fish in the extensive escapement in a very large river system, plus thousands more in regional fisheries and hatcheries.
