Description
An underwater video camera was operated in the flume of the Shasta River Fish Counting Facility (SRFCF) 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from September 2, 2020, until January 11, 2021. A total of 4,168 fall run Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) were estimated to have entered the Shasta River during the 2020 spawning season. A net total of 37 Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) were estimated to have entered the Shasta River prior to removal of the weir on January 11, 2021. Fish counting operations at the Scott River Fish Counting Facility began on September 28, 2020, and ended on January 4, 2021, due to high river flows. The total number of Chinook Salmon that entered the Scott River during the 2020 season is estimated to be 855 fish. A net total of 1,766 Coho were observed moving upstream through the counting station during the season.
Project Benefit
Adult abundance and trend information is critical monitoring information identified in both the Federal and State Coho Salmon recovery plans that are required for listing status updates and tracking the effectiveness of restoration actions. Without this basic population information delisting criteria could not be met.
