Description

This project supports analyzing previously archived chum otolith samples collected from commercial harvest between 2014 and 2021, and future samples anticipated to be taken in 2022 and 2023 during the implementation of a chum test fishery designed to provide information on run size and timing of hatchery and natural origin chum returning to the Nooksack River. This will enable Lummi Natural Resources Department (LNR) to develop a baseline stock proportion of hatchery and natural origin chum in the chum fishery.

Project Benefit

The hatchery program is designed to supplement the natural-origin Nooksack River Chum populations while supporting sustainable harvest opportunity to tribal and non-tribal fishermen. Currently, there is no way to determine the success of this program at providing increased fishing opportunity while buffering the natural populations from the fishery. This analysis will provide a basis for evaluating the performance of this program.
