Description    


From 2021 through 2023, staff received interest from 23 private landowners and Alaska State Parks for work along the Chena River, Salcha River, West Fork Chena River, and the Chatanika River. From those proposals, ADF&G helped fund or gave technical advice on nine streambank rehabilitation and stabilization projects. As a result, this grant helped fund the removal of 55 meters of structures detrimental to salmon, rehabilitation of 598 meters of streambank, revegetation of 0.137 acres of riparian area, and protection of 218 meters of streambank through a combination of cabled spruce trees, rootwads, and fencing.



At four sites, structures detrimental to juvenile salmon were removed from the riparian area (including bulkheads, gabions, and rip rap embankments); at 8 sites, streambanks were stabilized utilizing: brush layering (7 sites), rootwads (3 sites), and spruce tree revetments (1 site); at 1 site, fencing was installed to protect riparian habitat; and at all 9 sites, riparian habitat was revegetated using native vegetated mat (8 sites), willows (9 sites), and, at one site, a combination of bluejoint, sedges, fireweed, nagoonberries, and Arctic rose.

Project Benefit    


This project will benefit fish habitat directly by: removal of at least 91 meters of detrimental structures from streams; conservation of at least 610 meters of streambank; and rehabilitation of at least 610 meters of streambank. These results will help ensure healthy fish populations, good fish habitat, riparian vegetation and function, and opportunities for subsistence fishing.
