Description
Sweetwater Creek is a tributary to Lapwai Creek in Nez Perce County, Idaho and the Nez Perce Reservation. In cooperation with landowners, the Nez Perce Soil and Water Conservation District (NPSWCD) completed a steelhead habitat restoration design on 1.75 miles of Sweetwater Creek with in-stream habitat structures, tree planting, grass seeding and stream crossings. The planned measures will help support a more extensive riparian zone and floodplain, accumulate sediment, and create steelhead spawning and rearing habitat. The design includes 58 in-stream wood structures including beaver dam analogs, log jumbles and post assisted log structures.
The proposed metrics reported an intended design for 3.5 miles of stream; however, this number was incorrect due to human error by NPSWCD. The actual design is for 1.75 miles.
Project Benefit
Protection of spawning and rearing habitat along 3.5 miles of Sweetwater Creek.

Description and scope of the plan implemented | |
The project, when designed, will be implemented according to the NMFS ESA Recovery Plan. Lapwai Creek has been identified as one of the Major Spawning Areas and one of the highest priority watersheds for protection and restoration in the Clearwater River lower mainstem population of the Clearwater Major Population group in the Snake River steelhead Distinct Population Group. Project designs will implement restoration priorities identified in the Recovery Plan for this population. This population is a must have one for recovery of the MPG. The project meets Restoration strategy numbers A- riparian habitat (page 82), B-Channel Condition (page 83), and C-Fish Habitat (page 85). |
