Description
This project operated the Afognak River adult salmon enumeration weir from 2020 through 2022. Two field technicians were stationed at the field site for the duration of the sockeye salmon adult run; supplies needed to support the project objectives were purchased prior to and throughout each field season. Operation of the weir provided timely and accurate temporal/spatial estimates of escapements by age/sex/length, enabling inseason management adjustments and review of escapement goals.
Project Benefit
An accurate assessment of sockeye salmon escapement in the Afognak River, a primary contributor to Kodiak Archipelago subsistence, will benefit subsistence users by providing timely and accurate inseason escapement estimates of Afognak River sockeye salmon that allow for maximum subsistence opportunities while maintaining a sustainable escapement.
