Description
The diversion in Soctish Creek is a partial barrier to adult samonids and a total barrier to juvenile fish. This stream is frequently used by by non-natal coho during the summer months for rearing. Hoopa staff collected topographic survey data which was used to conduct a passage assessment. A more detailed topography was collected afterward to inform the design process and to calculate volumes of cut and fill required to implement the solution. Hoopa fisheries staff worked with engineers to create a 100% design which will be implemented once the required permits and funding are secured.
Project Benefit
Project Benefit: SONCC in the lower Trinity River are identified in the Recovery Plan as being at high risk of extinction. Restoration of tributary habitat for both natal and non-natal SONCC is therefore of great importance. Lower reaches of Soctish Creek provide year-round flows of cool water into the Trinity River. Both non-natal and natal juvenile SONCC as well as adults will be afforded free access to an additional 6 miles of suitable habitat consisting of pools, riffles and runs. Therefore, this project is expected to support increases in survival and growth of Coho as well as the other native anadromous salmonids.
