Description
During 2019–2021, a floating fish counting weir was operated at Pasagshak River. The total number of sockeye salmon estimated to have escaped was 4,537 fish in 2019, 3,922 fish in 2020, and 8,551 fish in 2021. Sport, commercial, and subsistence fishery closures did not occur during the 2019 to 2021 seasons, but closed waters were increased in Pasagshak Bay for commercial fishing at times to maximize escapement. Age, sex, and length data was collected from the escapement during all years. Limited samples were collected from the subsistence harvest during 2019 through 2021.
Project Benefit
The Pasagshak River, which supports the primary Kodiak Island road system subsistence sockeye fishery, has recently (2014 and 2015) had extremely low escapement, suggesting actions are needed to conserve the fishery resource for future run health. Timely and accurate escapement estimates will allow for management adjustments inseason to maintain the sustainability of this run and to provide sustainable subsistence harvests for local residents.
