Description

In 2016, this project restored 30.5 meters of riverbank to a natural riparian state by installing root wads and brush layering (using willow stems) for bank stabilization and vegetative matting to improve the riparian area. A light penetrating walkway with river access stairs were installed (not originally proposed) as well as an articulated concrete matting walkway, both of which were placed along existing corridors to help localize foot traffic and ultimately protect the existing and restored riverbank.

Project Benefit

This project will restore and protect 30.5 meters of riparian habitat at the Kasilof River State Recreation Site. A healthy riparian system plays an important role in maintaining healthy salmon populations, providing food, shelter, regulated water temperatures, low flow velocity waters, and resting areas that are beneficial to juvenile salmon.
