Description

This project documented the locations and habitat characteristics of spawning or high-value rearing habitat for anadromous fish species in the mainstem Tulsequah River. Field studies emphasized the area identified by Canada as potentially being affected by discharge from the Tulsequah mine proposed. The results were provided to Canadian federal and provincial agencies, Taku River Tlingit First Nation, Douglas Indian Association, the Governor’s Office, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, and other interested stakeholders. High value spawning and rearing habitat was identified throughout the mainstem area studied and will be used in ongoing watershed planning efforts.

Project Benefit

Helps meet three goals of the Cooperative Salmon Habitat and Stock Project Area:

Assess transboundary salmon stocks and aquatic ecosystem; Assist with improving management of complex salmon ecosystem; Improve departments ability to meet Sustainable Salmon Fisheries Policy.
