Description

The project begins a significant modeling effort on the Sprague River intended to enable prediction of the rivers response to land management related non-point source loading of nutrients and heat. Data streams necessary for successful model development include periodic collection of nutrients, TSS, temperature, and flow at a network of sites, along with a series of synoptic samples (longitudinal samples collected at nearly the same time). The initial effort started the collection of essential parameters at a network of 6 sites in the Sprague system.

Project Benefit

The two models being developed, QUAL2E and SWAT, will enable quantitative assessment of nutrient loading and water quality conditions in specific reaches of the Sprague River. In addition, we will use these models to predict the results of various restoration approaches. Thus these models are expected to help us define the problems and craft solutions to them. Model development will take several years, but will culminate in a highly useful set of tools for diagnosing and treating watershed problems that are causing significant problems for salmon downstream, and help us to prepare the Upper Klamath Basin to once again sustain healthy salmon runs. Funding through the PCSRF supplements other funding supporting this work, which will take at least three years to complete.

Project begins the development of nonpoint source models for the Sprague River in support of restoration efforts intended to improve the Sprague system in advance of the reintroduction of anadromous salmonids, and to reduce nutrient loading to the hypereutrophic Upper Klamath Lake, and to thereby improve conditions for the downstream receiving waters where anadromous fish still reside (i.e. in the Klamath River).
