Description

Tasks involved in meeting the Lake Ozette sockeye population monitoring project goals identified in the Lake Ozette Sockeye Hatchery and Genetics Monitoring Plan (HGMP) include: A) Lake Ozette Sockeye Smolt Trapping in the Ozette River, B) Lake Ozette Sockeye Adult Run Size Estimation at the Ozette River weir, C) Adult Sockeye Lake Hydroacoustic Abundance Surveys, D) Umbrella Creek Adult Sockeye Escapement (Weir tagging/recovery), and E) Sockeye/kokanee spawner surveys, otoliths and genetic sampling and analyses (Lake and tributaries of the Ozette basin).

Project Benefit

To address essential components of recovery planning for Lake Ozette sockeye through beach spawner surveys, otolith and genetic sampling, abundance and productivity estimation, and trends in freshwater and marine productivity of hatchery- and natural-origin sockeye. All activities will contribute to understanding the effectiveness of hatchery supplementation activities, while conserving the genetic and ecological characteristics of the ESU and increasing viability.
