Data Set Information

Name
Fatty acids in blubber of humpback whales 2001-2008
Description
This data set contains concentrations of individual fatty acids and lipid content in blubber of humpback whales collected from the Gulf of Maine, southeast Alaska, Hawaii, and off the coast of Hispaniola between 2001-2008. Biopsy samples were collected in support of genetic and contaminant exposure studies conducted at the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, and for the Structure of Populations, Levels of Abundance, and Status of Humpbacks (SPLASH) projects. Samples were analyzed in order to derive age models for Atlantic and Pacific humpback whales based on specific fatty acids, with funding from the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program of the Office of Protected Resources, National Marine Fisheries Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, US Department of Commerce. Analyses were conducted by the Environmental Chemistry Program, Northwest Fisheries Science Center, National Marine Fisheries Service using rigorous, documented performance-based analytical protocols and quality assurance criteria.
