AbstractClams are efficient vectors of potent neurotoxins, collectively called paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), to higher trophic levels. However, few data exist on total toxicity (i.e., sum of all congeners¿ toxicities) in clams from the Alaskan Arctic. Quantifying total toxicity in bivalves requires sophisticated analytical techniques, such as, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are efficient methods for semi-quantifying toxicity in clams, however, they underestimate total toxicity. We measured PSTs (STX eq.) in clams from the Alaskan Arctic (n = 15) using ELISA and HPLC methods to develop a linear model for estimating total toxicity from ELISA toxin concentrations. Further, we characterized PST profiles (n = 51) and quantified total PST concentrations in clams (n = 52). We successfully developed a corrective linear model for estimating total toxicity in clams from ELISA toxin values (R2adj = 0.95, p < 0.001). Clams contained mostly p
