AbstractHydrography in wetland ecosystems controls sedimentary processes, material fluxes, and patterns of primary and secondary production. For tidal freshwater systems, however, few in situ measurements have been made compared with multiple studies of saltmarshes. We address this knowledge gap by characterizing water velocity and discharge and how they varied with river stage and spring-neap tidal modulation at two types of tidal freshwater wetlands, forested swamps and herbaceous marshes in the lower Columbia River and estuary (USA). We deployed a bottom-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler at the outlets of four tidal creeks and sampled continuously over 12 to 20-day periods during periods of high (May–June 2017) and low (July–August 2017) river stage. We observed unsteady flow with clear velocity maxima on both flood and ebb tides associated with bankfull conditions and, to a lesser degree, the initial flood pulse. There was strong spring-neap modulation resulting in synodic variatio
